“More Money Than God: Hedge Funds and the Making of a New Elite”

“More Money Than God: Hedge Funds and the Making of a New Elite” Sebastian introduces new ideas and debates criticisms without ever skirting myopia. The LTCM and Quantum (George Soros) chapters are especially good, but reading any less than the entire book would be doing yourself a disservice. And this is coming from someone who took three years to finish reading it. It's a testament to the merit of Mallaby's book that I now have some sympathy for financial traders. Up to this point, the books I've read about Wall Street have all been scathing. Let us know what’s wrong with this preview of More Money Than God by Sebastian Mallaby. Mallaby describes various hedge funds and their effect on markets, often explaining how these hedge funds defied the ‘laws’ of finance. Indeed, it is illustrated how hedge funds managers were able to generate above-market returns by finding statistical anomalies, patterns, asymmetrical bets, and sometimes by ‘simply’ p...

What is the best way to learn to do financial modelling?

What is the best way to learn to do financial modelling? Examining the past in an analytical context is only half the story (or less). Developing an understanding of how a company's financial statements might look in the future is often the key to equity valuation. Again, the historic trend is a good place to start when forecasting expenses. Acknowledging that there are big differences between the fixed costs and variable costs incurred by a business, analysts are smart to consider both the dollar amount of costs and their proportion of revenue over time. If selling, general and administrative (SG&A) expense has ranged between 8% and 10% of revenue in the past ten years, then it is likely to fall into that range in the future. The kind of success achieved by value investors like Warren Buffett, John Neff, and Michael Price should serve as proof enough for the same, all of whom swear by this classic. Written barely five years after the Great Depression of 1929, this work was ori...

Financial Book reviews – 39 Months

Financial Book reviews – 39 Months This is an easy book to read, not overly complicated and full of abstract formulas and charts. It really has the potential to positively change its readers' view on the financial world and how to live in it. We all have our own set of beliefs about money which shows up in our day-to-day lives with how we spend and save. This book helps you shed some of the long held beliefs that may not be serving your financial goals. I love how straightforward this book is written and takes something complex (investing and tax codes) and makes it incredibly simple. I intend to give this book to my brother as one of his wedding presents. Really hope he will read it and change his outlook on savings/investing/saving for retirement (and hope for a better outcome than my unsuccessful attempt on giving him “the millionaire next door”). I consider this blog to be one of the most important sources of personal financial advice on the internet. Your first au...

Wiley Finance: Investment Banking : Valuation, Leveraged Buyouts, and Mergers and Acquisitions 881 by Joshua Rosenbaum and Joshua Pearl This book fills a noticeable gap in contemporary finance literature, which tends to focus on theory rather than practical application. It focuses on the primary valuation methodologies currently used on Wall Street—comparable companies, precedent transactions, DCF, and LBO analysis—as well as M&A analysis. The ability to perform these methodologies is especially critical for those students aspiring to gain full-time positions at investment banks, private equity firms, or hedge funds. This is the book Rosenbaum and Pearl wish had existed when we were trying to break into Wall Street. Investment Banking, Second Edition will make sure you are prepared. This is how I got started learning about investment banking, and this is what ultimately led to my offer. I thought it was very helpful, but you need to actually do the valuation to get it. F...
