The Psychology Book: Big Ideas Simply Explained by DK, Paperback

This was a really fun quick-hit book with different events reviewed in a two-page spread on each that talks about what led up to it and how the consequences were either. I'm a history buff, but I somehow always end up reading up on the same areas and time periods.

Not all the material is presented in this aphoristic, overly-designed way; the book is filled with one-page articles of a couple of columns of text, an image or pull quote, and a sidebar giving the timeline context for the idea. For example, the article on Stanley Milgram’s famous work on obedience covers six pages and addresses the topic in some depth, and the article on Philip Zimbardo’s well-known prison experiment covers two pages. In The Literature Book, go through around 100 articles that introduce you to the most celebrated and most timeless pieces of literature worldwide.

If you're fascinated by the human mind,The Psychology Bookis both an invaluable reference and illuminating read. With concise explanations of different schools of psychology including psychotherapy, cognitive psychology and behaviorism, this is an ideal reference whether you're a student, or a general reader.

Of course no history book can be complete and there are always choices to be made, but all in all the authors did a great job. All events are described with sufficient background, but always in a neutral way. Each described event comes with a timeline listing related events, and the causes and relationships between events are explained. Reading this book made me realize that as a history buff, I was sorely lacking in a few areas that the authors had brought to mind. Recommend to students and hobbyists as a tool for useful reference and learning.

The only content we will consider removing is spam, slanderous attacks on other members, or extremely offensive content (eg. pornography, pro-Nazi, child abuse, etc). We will not remove any content for bad language alone, or for being critical of a book. However, I did think it could have used a wider usage of maps to help better establish the location of the events that were being discussed.

So with reading even these entries in this book, it takes me some time to understand what’s going on. So before you buy the book, look at the table of contents. The book doesn’t so much explain how the atmosphere works, or how clouds work, or how the structure of a cell is built. Rather, it shows the concepts, ideas, and inventions of great thinkers and how they contributed to the science we have today.

I have to confess, this is the first time I completely understood complex things like how World War I really began and why. Because it lays out the history of our world in an easy and interesting way. It hits on the main events of the world and gives a general knowledge of world history.

It's your authoritative guide to over 100 key ideas, theories and conditions, including the collective unconscious, the "selfish" gene, false memory, psychiatric disorders, and autism. The Psychology Bookis your visual guide to the complex and fascinating world of human behavior. Discover how we learn, become emotionally bonded with others, and develop coping mechanisms to deal with adversity, or conform in a group. Get to know key thinkers, from Freud and Jung to Elizabeth Loftus and Melanie Klein, and follow charts and timelines to make sense of it all and see how one theory influenced another. DK acts as the parent company for Alpha Books, publisher of the Idiot's Guides series.

With beautiful illustrations, infographics, and timelines, The History Book is a fascinating journey from the dawn of civilization to the lightning-paced culture of today. This is the second book of the Big Ideas Simply Explained series. The next one on my list is The Movie Book which I will pick up at the library tomorrow.

Perfect for an avid student or armchair historian, the clear explanations of ideologies behind events that have shaped our world into what it is today. We need history books that look at ideas and people, in all parts of the world, and from different perspectives. And we need explanations in straightforward language, with as little regional bias as possible.

  • A nice overview of world history, and the diagrams do a good job of demonstrating causes and effects.
  • However, as I’ve stated before I don’t have the science mind.
  • This book is colorful and it has many illustration so it won't make you feel bored.
  • If you or your kid enjoy all things science, then this book is well recommended.
  • It was more of an annoyance when I had to verify the occasional unfamiliar factoid that felt subjective or suspect when the topic was literature.

Goodreads

, is that I found the entries here much harder to understand. However, as I’ve stated before I don’t have the science mind.

But that’s the nature of science books and religion. It’s to be expected that you won’t (or might not) agree with every article.

The Psychology Book: Big Ideas Simply Explained

I actually did get a lot from the multicultural nature of the review. The most interesting Big Ideas Explained Simply book I've read, though that might just be because I love history more than economics and politics. Was a good break from all the epic fantasy serieses which I've been reading because I made the tragic mistake of borrowing five first books of different epic fantasies within the same library trip some time in the start of December. Reputable sources should always present other viewpoints, but unfortunately, The History Book’s presentation gives the idea that theirs is the only view. And at this point, I lost a tremendous amount of faith in the accuracy of anything I’d already ingested.

Obviously it's you can't include everything, so one could quibble about that. It's overwhelmingly about Europe, a fair amount of Asia. -Unfortunately, my concern over this lack of sources and vetted credentials was exacerbated by the frequent usage of emotionally charged adjectives. It’s one thing to summarize a historical figure or event in an accessible manner. It’s quite another to essentially tell readers how they should FEEL about said figure and/or event.

Book review:Big Ideas Simply Explained

This one is likely one of the most difficult subjects in this series. This book does an admirable job in hitting some of the major history-shaping events. It took me a month of intermittent reading to finish this book, but it covers a lot of ground. I very much like the DK series "Big Ideas Simply Explained" in how clearly they are structured and how they cross reference chapters that belong together or complement each other.

Considered something that can be scrapped without loss, it is frequently reduced to a mere stereotypical look at the most famous monsters and saints, heroes and villains. The argument is that general knowledge can be “looked up”. Is the book advisable for people who just need to acquire a basic understanding of world history? I'd also appreciate being told about other book which will serve that purpose. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read.

No matter, this is still a good compilation of scientific ideas from across the millennia. Here, you’re reading about what a particular person’s thought was. Even if many people disagreed with it, it either stood the test of time or it was a gateway to discovering a better view. A fabulous book for either a refresher on history, or if, like me, you can't string what you've learned in chronological order of need gaps filled in. While it doesn't go too in depth on anything (most subjects get two pages, the longest concepts get 8, with pictures and quotes) this is so readable that it is probably the only world history book that won't overwhelm someone.

I like how simplified it was written but maybe not good for someone who wants to go in details in learning History. I just think of this book as an outline of learning History.
